High-Strength Low-Alloy Steel (HSLA) is an alloy steel that provides better mechanical properties and greater resistance to corrosion than standard commercial grades of carbon steel. Unlike most steels, HSLA steel is not made to meet a specific chemical composition but rather to specific mechanical properties. HSLA steels are more resistant to rust because of its lack of Pearlite. Because of the strength-to-weight ratio of the HSLA steel, it is used for the structure of cars, trucks, cranes, bridges, buildings and other applications that are designed to handle large amounts of stress or need a good strength-to-weight ratio. Because of their higher strength and toughness HSLA steels usually require 25-30% more power to form, as compared to commercial grade carbon steels.
